Courageous Companions is a registered charity which provides quality trained certified Service Dogs to Military Veterans and First Responders who suffer with physical and/or psychological operational injuries as a result of their service.

Mission Support Element Commander at Department of National Defense – Canadian Forces
July 2015 – December 2016 (1 year 5 months)

– Senior manager and leader of a diverse team of 90+ personnel across a wide range of support functions to provide all required administrative, financial, logistics and engineering support

– Leader of a high readiness organization whose mandate is to deploy into austere environments to enable the Royal Canadian Air Force to fly air operations missions.

Wing Administration Officer (Director HR, 9 Wing) at Department of National Defence
June 2012 – July 2015 (3 years 1 month)

As a member of the 9 Wing Gander Executive Management Team, I provided leadership and direction to the development and implementation of strategic objectives (operational and HR) in support of the attainment of the organization’s operational objectives. I was also responsible for the team that supported the approximately 400 employees within Canadian Forces Base 9 Wing Gander and sub organizations.

I oversaw the development and implementation of HR programs and policies for units across Newfoundland. I provided direct leadership to a staff of eight HR professionals and acted as the senior HR policy adviser to the Commander (ie CEO) on all core areas of HR professional capabilities.

With full HR accountability in the Region, my HR program delivery responsibilities included: Labour Relations; Staffing; Recruiting; Conflict Resolution and Mediation Services; Employee Assistance Counselling and Program Coordination; Training and Learning; Legislative programs including Employment Equity, Official Languages, Ethics training, and Harassment Prevention; Workforce Planning; Performance Management; Occupational Health and Safety; Leadership and Organizational Development; Change Management; Compensation and Benefits administration. My staff budget was $2.1 million.

With full financial accountability within my organization, I was responsible for: financial controlling, expenditure planning, initiation and management, revenue and accounts payable management, budgeting, in-year cash forecasting, business planning, project management, and funding proposals. My operations and maintenance budget was $300K.

Second-in-command of a large human resources focused organization comprised of over 250 personnel: 120 unionized and 30 non-unionized civilian employees, and 100 military members.

Managed all Canadian Forces human resources policies and applications within the organization, including: employee and labour relations; investigations, grievances, and disciplinary processes; personnel appraisals; performance measurement; performance management; coaching, mentoring, and training; harassment prevention; compensation and benefits, and staff recruitment.

Oversaw all financial management functions for the organization, including: purchasing and life cycle management, revenue and accounts payable, cash forecasting, and business planning.

Founder/owner/operator of a home-based pet sitting business that provided reliable pet sitting services to clients in the Winnipeg area. With 5 employees, Winnipeg Pet Sit! served all areas of the city.

Skills gained as a small business owner/operator include: website development, advertising, staffing and hiring, payroll, tax filing, billing, accounting, Worker’s Compensation and Benefits, customer service.

– Experience in using best judgment and initiative in determining follow up actions to ensure that all aspects of the position are completed efficiently and effectively.

– Muti-tasked a wide-variety of daily activities for the Commander and Executive staff, ie., travel arrangements, calendar management, expense reconciliations, budgetary activities, report generation/creation and acting as a personal assistant when necessary.

– Liaised with all levels of management within the 17 Wing organization.

Budget Coordinator:

– Responsible for preparation of the annual operating budgets for the Executive Team including reviewing and monitoring operating expenses for review by the Commander.
– Experience in expense accounting and general ledger maintenance, including ability to draft operating budgets and prepare forecasts.
